Authorities on Saturday recovered human remains in the Baldy Mountain wilderness near the search area for actor Julian Sands, who has been missing for more than five months.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said hikers around Mount Boldi found the body around 10 a.m. and alerted authorities.
The body was taken from the wilderness to the county coroner’s office this week for official identification, the statement said. No other details were available.
British actor Sands, who starred in A Room with a View, Warlock and The Killing Fields, has been missing since January 13.
Last weekend, the Sheriff’s Department resumed its search for Sands, with more than 80 volunteers, sheriff’s deputies and other sheriff’s personnel scouring the wilds of Baldy Mountain. Despite using two helicopters and a team of drones, the team was unable to locate the 65-year-old man.
Sands’ family said earlier this week that they were “extremely grateful” to all those who helped search for Sands.
“We hold Julien in our hearts with the brightest memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and a creative and collaborative performer.” the family said in a statement. Sheriff’s Office.
Sands is an avid hiker and climber, told the Guardian in 2020 He said that he was happiest “on a wonderfully cold morning when he was nearing the top of the mountain”. He also told the magazine that his most dangerous experience occurred during a hiking expedition in the Andes Mountains at altitudes over 20,000 feet. Sands said the storm was coming and “some people close to us died.”
In the months since Sands was reported missing, the Sheriff’s Department completed eight aerial and ground searches. But severe storms in the first few months of the year piled up several feet of snow on Mount Baldy, hampering search efforts.
Although temperatures have warmed in recent weeks, officials said this week that “extreme alpine conditions” continue to prevent access to several areas of Mount Baldy.
