Treasure hunters in Florida have made a fortune after finding hundreds of silver coins inside part of a shipwreck dating back 300 years, Fox 35 reports.
Treasure hunters say they made the incredible discovery inside a ship from the early 1700s that was sunk during a hurricane. Fox 35.
“It was kind of numbing in a way. I never expected that. I always expected it, but never expected it,” said Grant Gitchlag, who was on the expedition.
Sal Guttuso, who oversaw the operation, knew the divers might have hit the jackpot when he received a text message from the team saying they might have found something valuable.
“We're working on something really good,” he said. (Related article: Hitler's gold? Treasure hunters excavate palace used as Nazi brothel after clues found in diary)

According to the outlet, it is extremely rare to find anything of value on a ship from that era, as others have already searched for it. What is particularly noteworthy about this case is the amount of coins that were found.
“To have that much in just a few days is a very exciting start,” Gitchlagh said.
The discovery reportedly came after a team was searching for treasure in the area, and the media outlet said the coin will undergo a cleaning process after being submerged for three centuries.
“You see, treasure doesn't grow back. Every time you take it out, it's one less piece to find,” Gitchlag said.
