Huntsville Housing Authority might prolong curfew after demonstrating positive outcomes in reducing crime

Huntsville Housing Authority Considers Expanding Curfew Policy

The Huntsville Housing Authority is looking into broadening its curfew policy, as it seems to be aiding efforts to combat crime in the area.

This curfew has been active for residents in housing authorities since June, put in place after a tragic shooting incident that resulted in two fatalities at the LR Patton apartments.

The topic was addressed during their annual renewal session on Monday.

“Our residents feel safer,” remarked Antonio McGinnis, the executive director. “They believe their children can play outside without worry. One resident mentioned it feels like a ghost town when the curfew is active.”

The current curfew is set for 9 PM to 6 AM on weekdays and from 10 PM to 6 AM on weekends.

McGinnis emphasized, “We are committed to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of violence. We want to dissuade outsiders from entering our community, as our families deserve to enjoy a peaceful neighborhood.”

Huntsville City Councilwoman Michelle Watkins also touched on the crime issue during the meeting. “It’s often misunderstood. The trouble doesn’t come from residents; it’s from those who come from outside. If you’re here to create trouble, we don’t want you around,” she stated.

McGinnis mentioned that there are over 1,900 individuals with Section 8 housing vouchers and nearly 1,500 living in public housing, with over 600 families waiting for housing assistance.

“Not everyone is grateful yet,” he said. “However, most residents appreciate the curfew and believe it contributes to their safety while they are living in our community.”
