Hurricane Erin Anticipated to Regain Strength After Being Reduced to Category 3

Hurricane Erin Update

Hurricane Erin rapidly escalated to a strong Category 5 storm on Saturday, but by Sunday morning, its winds had diminished to 125 mph, which moved it back to Category 3 status. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) suggests that significant hurricane activity may be limited in the upcoming days.

Currently, Erin is located approximately 235 miles from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and about 200 miles from Grand Turk Island. Its core is projected to pass through both the Turks and Caicos Islands, as well as the southeastern Bahamas late Sunday into Monday.

Warnings for tropical storms are now in effect for the Turks and Caicos, as well as the southeast Bahamas. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds from the outer rain bands associated with Erin.

Erin is traveling at about 13 miles per hour heading west-northwest. As it moves forward, the storm is expected to gradually shift northward on Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, forecasts indicate that Erin’s core will be positioned east of the Bahamas, with impacts reaching Bermuda and the US East Coast by mid-week.

In the days to come, Erin will significantly affect the Bahamas, the US East Coast, Bermuda, and much of Atlantic Canada, potentially causing dangerous RIP currents and challenging surf conditions.

Residents of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and Bermuda are urged to monitor the situation closely, as strong winds from Erin’s outer bands may impact the area by mid-week.
