Hushabye Nursery, a pioneering organization dedicated to caring for infants suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), is pleased to announce its expansion into Mohave and Yavapai Counties. This expansion will enable Hushabye Nursery to provide critical services to more families in rural Arizona, ensuring those living in remote areas have access to the support and care they need.
The new expansion means all group sessions will be held virtually, allowing families to participate in therapy and peer support from the comfort of their own home.
Additionally, Hashabai Nursery will provide nurse case managers to help rural families access essential services, similar to how they have successfully done so during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are excited to expand Hashabai Nursery's services into Mohave and Yavapai Counties,” said Hashabai Nursery co-founder Tara Sandem. “This expansion is important because it will allow us to serve families in Northern Arizona who may have limited access to the specialized care and support their infants need. Providing virtual therapy and peer support along with a dedicated nurse case manager will ensure these families receive the comprehensive care their infants need to recover. We are thrilled to be able to serve these rural communities, which aligns with our mission to provide equitable access to healthcare for all infants suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome and their families.”
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a baby is born every 15 minutes with NAS, which is caused by the mother's prenatal opioid exposure and involves a complex and painful detoxification process in the days after birth. The Arizona Department of Health Services reports that between June 15, 2017 and December 10, 2021, 3,156 babies were born with NAS.
Infants with NAS are among the smallest victims of today's opioid health crisis, a situation exacerbated by persistent barriers to healthcare access and equity for infants. Hushabye Nursery's model provides a therapeutic environment, short-term medical care, and social services for infants suffering from NAS, while providing outpatient services and resources for families struggling with opioid use disorder.
Founded by a neonatal nurse practitioner, Hushabye Nursery is the first NAS-focused nursery in the United States to integrate health care and social services while prioritizing both infant safety and direct family involvement in the infant's care and recovery. Recently, Hushabye Nursery was selected as one of 10 organizations nationwide in the inaugural Behavioral Health Recovery Innovation Challenge through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
