An emotional mother who was personally affected by the wildfires confronted Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday and begged him for answers about how he will help Californians affected by natural disasters.
The woman whose daughter’s school burned down approached her neighborhood’s governor and asked him how he planned to help communities devastated by five rapidly spreading fires in different parts of Los Angeles. Newsom claimed he was trying to call President Joe Biden, and the woman bluntly told him she didn’t believe he was trying to call the president.
“Can you hear me? I can’t believe it,” the woman asked. Newsom claimed he tried calling “five times” and his mother asked why the president wasn’t answering the phone.
“There’s no reception, so you have to rely on cell phone service,” Newsom explained.
“Okay, okay, I want to be here when you call the president,” she replied.
“I’m grateful [that]I am currently doing it and should get a refund soon and get personalized assistance to help you. I am devastated for you and especially sorry for your daughter,” Newsom said.

The woman then asked Newsom why the state’s fire hydrants didn’t have enough water to fight the fires. The governor assured her that he was taking all necessary steps to provide Californians with the resources they needed, before cutting the conversation short and getting into his car.
“What are we going to do? It’s going to be full. [the hydrants] You know that personally,” she said. “I’m going to fill all the fire hydrants myself. But are you going to do that?”
The governor replied, “We’ll do whatever we can.”
“But you’re not,” she interjected. “Well, did you know there’s water dripping down there, Governor?” The water will come out of there, so please use it. ”
The governor responded, “Thank you. We will do everything we can right now, including ensuring people’s safety.” (Related: James Woods cries on live TV over escape from devastating wildfires raging across California)
Despite the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) receiving a large salary from taxpayers, the city lacks the budget to install enough fire hydrants, according to an analysis by government transparency group OpenTheBooks. It is said that they are doing so. Several fire hydrants in the state ran dry as LADWP and fire officials tried to extinguish the blaze that destroyed thousands of homes, neighborhoods and communities in the region.
