CBS host Margaret Brennan and Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance sparred Sunday over former President Donald Trump's debate responses, some of which Brennan claimed were lies.
Vance appeared on “Face the Nation” to review and discuss Trump's performance going head-to-head with President Joe Biden on Thursday night. Brennan began his questioning by addressing Trump's two responses, on abortion and January 6th, and asking Vance why Trump felt the need to make “false allegations” when he has “such a strong base.” (RELATED: 'I take responsibility': Nancy Pelosi admits to J6 fiasco, video reveals)
“Margaret, I think the media is interfering with much of this. We all know, and Nancy Pelosi herself has admitted on camera that she could have called for more National Guard members. She shares responsibility for the fact that the National Guard was not at the Capitol. We also know that multiple Democratic governors and states, and even Democratic senators and representatives, have tried to pass laws that would have legalized abortion up to the moment of birth. Most importantly, the media does not seem interested in fact-checking Joe Biden's many false claims, including his…” Vance began.
“We've lost track of the story. The media has covered this from every side and we've heard it's all our fault. But let's go back to the candidate you want to talk about here. Chris Miller said he would send 10,000 troops, but he never received an order from the president to send those troops to the Capitol that day,” Brennan interjected.
“Margaret, Nancy Pelosi said on camera that she also takes responsibility for the National Guard not playing a larger role. Of course, we know the Speaker of the House has extraordinary influence over the Capitol Police. That's not up for debate, Margaret. And more importantly, Joe Biden said that there have been no soldier deaths during his term, despite the failure to withdraw from Afghanistan resulting in the deaths of 13 soldiers,” Vance said.
“Joe Biden made multiple false statements during the debate and many in the media certainly seem completely uninterested in fact-checking what he said. And the reason, Margaret, is because Donald Trump performed so much better. Virtually everyone has been honest over the last 24 hours, and there has been a compelling contrast between Donald Trump's energy and grasp of the facts and Joe Biden's apparent inability to perform the job of president. And now, of course, we've moved into a new media cycle in which people try to cover it up. The American public saw what they saw. Trump can get the job done. Biden can't.”
Newly released HBO footage provided to Congress in early June showing former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying on camera that she “takes responsibility for not preparing them better” on January 6. According to a 2022 Senate report, both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reportedly had intelligence suggesting chaos and violence would occur at the Capitol prior to that day, but neither department acted.
Following the presidential debate, Democratic pundits began to come forward and question Biden's suitability as the Democratic nominee. A new post-debate CBS/YouGov poll not only found that 72% of voters believe Biden is not in the mental or cognitive health to run for a second term, but also that 47% of voters said Trump made his views clear during the debate, while 27% said they supported Biden.
