South32 Backs Hermosa Project in Nogales, Arizona
South32 has decided to support the Hermosa project, based at a remote operation center in Nogales, Arizona.
Currently, the Hermosa Project stands out as the only advanced mining project in the U.S. with the capacity to produce two key federally designated minerals: zinc and manganese. In February, it secured $2.16 billion in funding for developing a zinc lead sales deposit.
This investment marks the largest private financial commitment in southern Arizona’s history and represents a significant boost to the local economy in Santa Cruz County, according to the miners involved.
Last year, Hermosa was included in the U.S. high-speed permitting process, with company officials stating that it could potentially become one of the largest zinc producers in the world.
Centro employs advanced automation aimed at enhancing safety and productivity, which aligns with sustainable operational goals. The project, described as the result of nearly three years of design and planning, is intended to address long-term economic and employment objectives in Santa Cruz County.
Supporting a comprehensive workforce development initiative, the launch of the South32 Workforce Development Committee has been a significant milestone. This committee brings together local education leaders and South32 representatives to focus on the secondary education, facility development, resources, and training needs of local businesses.
Pat Risner, president of South32 Hermosa, emphasized that “Centro represents more than just a facility. It’s a commitment to sharing economic opportunities and values in Santa Cruz County.” He added that by establishing Centro in Nogales, the economic benefits from Hermosa will stay local, offering well-paying jobs and developing a skilled workforce for future generations, especially for historically excluded communities.
Attendees at the event included Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, local and state officials, city leaders, and representatives from various organizations, including the Port Authority and the University of Arizona.
Rep. Juan Ciscomani remarked, “CENTRO will be the cutting-edge operation center for the project, creating good-paying jobs and strengthening the economy.” He also noted that South32 Hermosa’s Centro is a significant advancement for regional development and production of crucial minerals in southern Arizona. The project aims to tie high-quality jobs, workforce training, and essential infrastructure to the community, ultimately bolstering the local economy and positioning the region as a center for responsible innovation and growth.
