Independence Police Department In Missouri Says Witnesses Blocked In Hit-And-Run Suspect Who Allegedly Tried To Escape

Local police announced they arrested a hit-and-run suspect surrounded by witnesses in Independence, Missouri on Saturday, July 27th.

According to a press release from the Independence Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m., when a 2010 Ford Edge was pulling out of a private driveway and struck a man on a bicycle.

The bicyclist attempted to flee the scene after the collision. Witnesses pursued the vehicle while calling authorities, who blocked off the vehicle and prevented the suspect from fleeing, the press release explained. Officers quickly arrived on the scene and took the suspect into custody. The names of the victim and suspect have not been released.

Authorities transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The victim is in critical condition. Police are still investigating the incident.

Those convicted of hit-and-run face In Missouri, there are a range of penalties that can be imposed depending on the details of the accident. Severe penalties can be placed on an offender's driving record, including the revocation of the offender's driver's license.

This crime can also be punished as a Class A misdemeanor with up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. In more serious cases, offenders can be charged with a Class E felony, which can be punished with up to four years in jail and a $5,000 fine if excessive property damage or injury was caused to the victim.
