Indiana’s Turkey Run State Park named among nation’s best

MARSHALL, IN — A state park in Indiana has once again been named one of the best parks in the nation.

Website TravelAwaits recommends Turkey Run State Park America’s 7th Best State Park. Aimed at travelers over the age of 50, the website featured the park on its list of “15 Best State Parks to Visit in the United States,” part of its annual Best of Travel Awards. .

The website highlighted the picturesque hiking opportunities in this park through sandstone canyons carved by Sugar Creek. Visitors to the park in Marshall, Indiana, can hike scenic trails, cross suspension bridges, and cross streams for views of their surroundings.

“With unique geological features and diverse wildlife, Turkey Run State Park is a nature lover’s paradise in the heart of America,” the site says.

One of those hikes, Trail 3, was named “Best Hike” by Midwest Living earlier this year. The study gave the trail top honors for the rock formations, waterfalls, and glacial potholes hikers encounter along the way, before climbing up from the canyon using wooden ladders.

Turkey Run State Park is about an hour and 15 minutes’ drive from downtown Indianapolis. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources recommends visiting Shays State Park in Waveland on the way. The bureau said the landscape is similar to Turkey Run, but with fewer people.

Turkey Run was one of three Midwestern parks in the top 15, along with Katy Trail State Park in Missouri and Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby, Illinois.
