According to police, members of the AZDPS State Gang Task Force tried to contact the driver, but the man tried to ram his car and flee.
KINGMAN, Ariz. — A man is behind bars after he crashed his car into two Department of Public Safety vehicles in Kingman, killing a 21-year-old woman, according to DPS officials.
The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, January 26, when detectives with the DPS State Gang Task Force attempted to contact the driver of a vehicle parked at a car wash in Kingman.
As detectives approached, the driver, identified as 44-year-old Juan Javier Ortiz, allegedly rammed his vehicle into the detectives' vehicle. Officers fired shots at Ortiz, who drove away from the scene.
While fleeing, Ortiz collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Bank Street and Northern Avenue. The other driver, Sarah Bingham, 21, of Kingman, died in the crash, DPS said.
Ortiz was taken into custody with only minor injuries and booked into the Mohave County Jail. He could face multiple felony charges. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
This incident is still under investigation and details are subject to change.
