The New York Times reported Saturday that Iran has warned Israel of a “war of annihilation” if it launches an all-out attack against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Tensions between Israel and the Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah have escalated since an Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack left some 1,200 people dead, with several skirmishes occurring in recent weeks. The escalating conflict has prompted Israeli officials to declare that Israel is at a turning point and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to say it could lead to “very violent action.” (Related: Latest comments from Israeli officials suggest Middle East powder keg is on the verge of exploding)

Iran's UN mission said it would “launch a full-scale military invasion” if Israel attacked Lebanon, where Hezbollah is based. Post to X Starting Friday.
“Iran considers the Zionist regime's propaganda to attack Lebanon to be psychological warfare, but if Iran were to launch a full-scale military invasion, a devastating war would surely ensue,” X's post said. “All options are on the table, including the full involvement of the resistance front.”
Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting along Israel's northern border for decades, and such skirmishes have become more frequent since October 7.
In April, U.S. forces shot down multiple Iranian drones bound for Israel in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike that killed a senior Iranian commander.
“The ground burned here yesterday and I am glad that you put it out. But the ground also burned in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said. Said “Those who think they can hurt us and that we will sit back and do nothing are making a big mistake. We are ready to take very strong action in the north,” he said, following a Hezbollah attack in early May.
