Iraq Arrests Five Suspects Who Allegedly Attacked Military Base Hosting American Troops And Injured Personnel

Reuters reported that Iraqi security forces arrested five people on Thursday on suspicion of involvement in Monday's missile attack on an air base housing U.S. troops.

A defense official told the Daily Caller News Foundation that five US service members and two contractors were wounded in the rocket attack. “All seven injured are in stable condition,” the official added. (Related: Houthi terrorists claim to have shot down expensive US drone)

“After a thorough legal investigation and listening to witness testimonies, five people involved in this illegal act were arrested,” the Iraqi Security Media Cell, the government agency in charge of security reporting, said in a statement. Reuters reportIraqi forces called Tuesday's attack “reckless” and claimed to have seized a truck equipped with a rocket launcher, the media reported.

Reuters previously reported that U.S. forces struck targets last week that Iraqi officials believe were planned for drone attacks. There are 2,500 U.S. troops and Iran-backed militias in Iraq, Reuters said. Iraq has reportedly demanded that America and its coalition forces withdraw by September 2025. An Iraqi intelligence source told the news agency that some U.S. troops would likely remain as advisers.

Attacks on US troops in the Middle East have surged since October 7, when Hamas invaded southern Israel, igniting the ongoing Hamas-Israel war. It is unclear whether the attack on the air base is linked to Iran's threats of retaliation following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, according to Reuters.
