Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz stumped human rights campaign chair Kelly Robinson during a congressional hearing on Wednesday when he was asked if he could explain the differences between women and men.
The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday on LGBT issues attended by Robinson and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines. At the hearing, Gaines recounted his experience competing with male swimmers, and Cruz asked Robinson to respond to Gaines’ testimony.(Related: ‘What about us?’: Riley Gaines hits back at Democratic senators defending men entering women’s locker rooms)
Cruz first addressed Gaines and asked, “As someone who has competed at the elite level, is there a difference between women and men in your experience?”
Gaines replied: “Of course, I think we learned this at an early age watching players under the age of 12 play. “Any change will overcome the male dominance, especially in a sport like swimming where lung capacity is so important,” she said.
Cruise then turned to Robinson and asked, “Do you agree with Mr. Gaines that there are differences between women and men?” “If the question is about trans women,” Robinson began. “I just want to ask, is there a difference between women and men?” Cruz asked again.
“What I can tell you is that the NCAA has rules. They’ve had rules for the last 10 years,” Robinson said. Cruz put more pressure on Robinson. “No, I’m asking. Do you think there’s a difference between women and men? Most people can easily answer this, but I’d like to know if you’re willing to do so. “
“I think there is a definition for sex,” says Robinson. “Is that what you mean? I’m trying to get you to say yes or no. I’m not trying to give a speech,” Cruz said.
Robinson’s organization, the Human Rights Campaign, recently Declared Declaring a National Emergency for LGBTQ Americans: “Following an unprecedented and dangerous surge in anti-LGBTQ+ congressional raids that have swept state legislatures this year, we are officially declaring a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the United States for the first time. issued an order,” he said.
Gaines is a swimmer at the University of Kentucky who gained media attention when she faced transgender swimmer Leah Thomas at the 2022 NCAA Women’s Championship.
