Florida State University (FSU) student Mackenzie Heter appeared on News Nation on Thursday evening, describing the horrifying moment when 20-year-old Phoenix Echner allegedly shot and killed people on campus, leaving two deaths and six wounded.
On Thursday, around noon, the first alert from the FSU X account was Sent He was advising students on the Tallahassee campus to go out and seek shelter as an active shooter. A heter who appeared on News Nation’s “Cuomo” to talk about her experiences said she came out of the “union” when she heard the first gunshot.
“I was out of the Union Army with my food for lunch and I noticed an orange hummer parked on this small service road near the Union Army,” said Heter. “So, as I walk, I walk past Hammer – the guy. I walk. I’m playing one of my airpods, music. I think it was the gunshot, the first gunshot I made with a shotgun.”
“I thought it was originally [it] It was a rifle, but it turns out [it] It was a shotgun. So he makes that shot in our direction and misses. It’s when he turns around and goes to Hammer, he grabs his pistol and he shoots the woman walking in front of him. That’s when I knew there was no target. There was no particular person. That was someone he could see,” added Heter.
Ichner was later identified by officials at a press conference Thursday afternoon due to student injuries and early reports of the video, which have emerged online. According to To NBC News. Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeill told reporters that the 20-year-old is the son of the sheriff’s aide and has access to the weapons. Related: GOP Lt. Hetter is then asked about the woman who saw her being shot. Heeter said she doesn’t believe the woman is a student at FSU because she was older and wore a scrub. FSU students were later asked about Ichner returning to his car and obtaining another weapon.
“It wasn’t like he really left it in the way he was parked in. It was like he opened the driver’s door and left the driver’s door open. [and] He was shot with his big gun. Then he went [and] I turned around and basically grabbed it straight,” Hater said.
FSU Police Chief Jason Trambower said Ichner was able to engage him, neutralize him and shoot multiple victims before arresting him. According to To NBC News.
When asked about her reaction to seeing a scrub woman being shot in front of her, the heter said she ran to the house.
“I ran. I live across West Tennessee Street and am grateful that I’m already on the nearby edge of Stop Sign and others, but I continued running all the way to my apartment,” Hater said.
None of the victims of the incident have been publicly identified. Ichner’s motivation has not been released yet.
