Democrat New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said on a podcast Wednesday that she struggles to support President Donald Trump’s “popular” ideas because she believes he is cruel.

Trump has supported the policy with a wide range of public support, including deporting illegal immigrants and reducing government waste, except for biological men from women’s sports. “Interestingly, the last time he ran a lot of democratic ideas, like he ran with middle class tax cuts and on paid leave. He was a much more Democrat at the time,” Gillibrand said. “And it feels like he’s shutting down a lot of bipartisan things he wanted to do in his first presidency by the Republicans around him. And he’s really leaning into this populism, which is typical of populism.”

“And the hardest thing that many people like me are to deal with is that he is very dishonest. He doesn’t mean that. And he says something that may be popular with everyone, but then he does it in the most mean, most divisive way possible,” she continued. “And he takes that oxygen out of the room every time, so that’s just a shame. You want the president to be the president of all people and he continues to choose not to be that guy.”

Former CNN political analyst Chris Chiliza I said Trump’s Tuesday speech in Congress was in part strong as he took a widespread support on the issue.

“Many times he’s created moments, created dramas, created things you can share, and did that on what I call the 80/20 issue.

For example, he pointed out that Trump highlights 19-year-old Payton McNabb. There was McNabb audience For Trump’s speech.

“The biological boys playing women’s sports are 80/20, and 80% of people (Democrats, Republicans, independents) don’t think biological men should be allowed to play,” Cillizza said.

He also said the president who promotes the Laiken Riley Act was another example of the “very popular” issue he raised in his address.

“So this is a young 20’s girl killed by an undocumented immigrant. Trump helped push it. It was the first law he signed into law as president,” he said. “This is very popular – 80/20. Democrats even voted for this in the Senate…Laken Riley’s sister and mom were there – it’s very powerful.”
