Many people don't know that fast-growing Maricopa County is the second largest voting jurisdiction in the United States, after Los Angeles County. The number of eligible voters continues to grow, with Republicans, Democrats and so-called “independents” each making up one-third of the electorate, making the county more competitive than ever. This often prevents the media from “calling” elections because race is an issue.

As an example, if you look at the state's 2022 attorney general race, that race was only 280 votes apart. This is unlike states like California, where one party has a built-in near-insurmountable registration lead and therefore is open to voting after a first-day decline in voting numbers.
