Mohave County pays approximately $18.4 million each year to operate the jail. And while booking fees and jail per diem fees are used to offset those costs, Sheriff Doug Schuster says it's still not enough.
The Mohave County Board of Supervisors last week approved a 19.3 percent increase in county jail booking fees and a 20.2 percent increase in the facility's per diem housing fee.
These costs amount to $91.89 per inmate per booking and $110.61 per day.
Last year's budget analysis called for 46% and 17% increases in prison per diem incarceration rates and booking fees, according to Schuster's proposed increases last month.
However, recognizing the county's projected $18.5 million budget deficit this year, the sheriff agreed to increases of 25% and 10% in fiscal year 2024.
Schuster said last month that last year's rate hikes did not fully recoup the county's costs as prison staff compensation increased and contract costs for inmate health care and nutrition continued to rise.
Direct operating costs for the Mohave County Detention Center will be estimated at $17.54 million in fiscal year 25, with additional overhead costs of $248,914 and administrative costs of $625,695, according to county records.
As of Monday, the jail's per diem rates and booking fees are at the highest level in five years, compared to last year's per inmate rate of $92. In 2019, its cost was $66.86.
Last year, the booking fee was $77 per inmate, compared to $63 in 2019.
