James Carville Urges Democrats To Protect Democracy By Implementing Bold Strategies

Democrats and Redistricting Concerns in Texas

In the “Political War Room,” Democratic strategist James Carville emphasized that his party might need to take drastic steps to manipulate a system that currently benefits them in order to “save democracy.” He expressed strong opposition to Texas’ rezoning proposal, suggesting it could potentially give Republicans up to five additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Democrats have characterized the proposed map as a significant threat to democracy.

In a YouTube video on Politicon, Carville urged that Democrats should consider more than just rezoning if they achieve unified control of the federal government in 2028. He mentioned, “Democrats talk about maintaining democracy—well, the truth is, many believe this democracy is far from complete.” Carville also pointed out that while the Constitution allows Congress oversight of federal elections, they might need to take bold actions, including possibly expanding the Supreme Court to 13 members. He expressed some skepticism about this move, saying, “You’re opening Pandora’s box.”

However, he stands firm in his belief that these measures are necessary to “save democracy.” Interestingly, a poll from the Annenberg Public Policy Center shows that only 29% of Americans support increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court.

Amidst former President Joe Biden’s assertion that Donald Trump poses a threat to democracy, an opinion survey from the Washington Post indicates that undecided voters in crucial swing states still trust Biden on this matter. Furthermore, Democrats are navigating challenges with former Vice President Kamala Harris as she positions herself as the presumptive candidate for the 2024 election, garnering significant backing from within the party.

Add to that, Independent Senator Bernie Sanders mentioned during a discussion that Democrats could be a “threat to democracy” based on Biden’s leadership approach. He noted, “I’m not going to discuss that. That’s why I’m proud to be independent.”
