James Spann launches a new 24/7 digital weather channel that serves all of Alabama.

There’s something new happening in Alabama’s weather scene.

James Spann has unveiled plans for a dedicated 24/7 weather channel aimed at all 67 counties in Alabama, which is sure to be embraced by many residents.

“This is James Spann, Chief Meteorologist,” he shared in a video on the Alabama Weather Network. “I’ve spent 47 years in professional broadcasting. I truly love weather. I know it intimately—better than most, really. I understand our people, our culture, and our unique geography.”

For Spann, this isn’t just another project; it represents a lifelong aspiration.

“One of my dreams has been to create a statewide weather network that can provide information everywhere in Alabama,” he stated. “I’m really excited to share that this dream is becoming a reality.”

The Alabama Weather Network is set to launch on August 11 and promises to deliver ongoing, thorough weather updates throughout the state. Spann pointed out that this will be the only around-the-clock digital weather service focused exclusively on Alabama.

“We’ll keep you informed about weather conditions across all 67 counties. Wherever you are in Alabama, you should stay updated on the weather,” Spann stressed.

“Severe weather like tornadoes, hurricanes, flash floods, and winter storms can hit anywhere in the state. Thanks to our Stormspotters and advanced technology, we will cover these events live,” he added.

The network will be available on multiple platforms, allowing people to watch via phones, tablets, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, and social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

“You can follow us right now on those platforms,” Spann encouraged.

“I’m really looking forward to this. Our network kicks off on August 11,” he concluded.

The outlet reports that the network will also be accessible through dedicated apps, websites, and Amazon Fire. Its production hub is located in Birmingham.

Besides continuous coverage during severe weather, the channel will broadcast pre-recorded programming that includes statewide forecasts refreshed every 20 minutes, as well as tips for beach care, gardening, events, and local attractions.

“There’s a real demand for reliable weather updates, especially in many rural areas that lack proper coverage. We aim to address those gaps,” Spann mentioned. “We have the resources now to get it right, which I’ve dreamt about for a long time.”

The service will also prioritize preparedness, assisting Alabama residents in getting ready for severe weather events, while educating both longstanding locals and newcomers.

“Weather can be intimidating for people who’ve just arrived; I understand that. Someone relocating from places like Portland or Boston might find themselves in an unexpected tornado situation,” he reflected. “Our goal is to protect everyone, whether they’ve lived here for ages or are new arrivals. We provide both immediate alerts and guidance on finding safe locations.”

Spann will retain his role as Chief Meteorologist at ABC 33/40 and will also appear on the new weather network. He is among the four owners of the network, alongside Bill Murray, John Oldshoe, and Bill Hardekoff.
