“We passed the first national popular vote interstate compact in the nation. We started it. We're now more than two-thirds there,” Raskin said. “It's 2024, so why not choose our president the same way we choose our mayors, representatives, senators and governors? Whoever gets the most votes wins, instead of a complicated, outdated system from the 18th century that was almost killed today, like on January 6, 2021. The only reason we met there was for the 12th Amendment process, which required that we hold a joint session and count the electoral votes that the governor sent in based on the certificate of confirmation.”

“But we knew who won the election. Everybody knew who won. But we're still doing 18th century rituals, which gave Donald Trump the opportunity to call up a mob, to come here and riot, and to tell them to fight, to fight like hell, or there will be no country,” Raskin continued. “Five people in American history have become president who lost the popular vote. Twice in this century alone, in 2000 and 2016. And I think the vast majority of Americans believe that to choose a president, we just need to hold an election and see who gets the most votes, not some complicated, shaky system, not some system where it's all decided in six or seven states, but a system where everyone's vote is counted equally everywhere in the country.”

Raskin called for a special House committee on Jan. 6 to recommend abolishing the Electoral College in 2022. (Related: 'The people can't be trusted': Jonathan Turley compares Raskin proposal to banning 'Big Gulp')

Mr Raskin was among several Democrats who said they were exploring ways to disqualify Mr Trump from the presidential election after the Supreme Court ruled in March that Colorado state officials had no right to remove him from the election. Mr Raskin had argued in 2017 that Mr Trump was part of a “hoax” perpetrated against the US by Russia.
