Jane Anderton, a dedicated community volunteer and past president of the library, has declared her intention to run for Mayor of Clay, Alabama.
A resident since 2005, Anderton is campaigning on a platform that emphasizes transparency in local government, enhancing civic engagement, and reinstating public commissions that were previously dissolved. Her campaign is built around three main promises: improving communication between the community and city officials, creating more avenues for resident involvement, and ensuring that public decision-making powers are restored.
For nearly two decades, Anderton has been a visible presence in Clay, recognized for her civic participation, dedication to the environment, and advocacy for education. She led the Clay Library Committee from 2014 until it was disbanded by the city council in 2024. Throughout her time, she voiced her concerns regarding the city’s decision-making processes, particularly the council’s choice to withdraw from Alabama Public Library Services.
In addition to her government-related activities, Anderton is well-known for her initiatives like community seed swaps and gardening projects at the Clay Public Library. She also founded Lake Cosby Careers and has been involved in various local beautification and conservation projects.
As a retired educator and grandmother of two, Anderton has spent many years volunteering in schools and faith-based organizations. Her previous roles include mentoring young readers and guiding students in programs like the Discovery Club and Vacation Bible School.
If elected, she plans to bring back county meetings that are open to the public, set standard hours for residents, and revive citizen advisory committees, including the Library Committee and those overseeing community assets like Lake Cosby.
Her campaign slogan, “Clay’s New Season,” captures her hope for a city leadership that is more engaging and promotes collaborative decision-making.
Anderton resides in Clay with her husband Chris, a retired UPS employee. Both are active at Cumberland Lake Golf Course and Lodge and are long-time members of the Refuge Church.
