Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners Selected for Rose Parade
Jacksonville State University’s renowned Marching Southerners have been chosen to perform at the upcoming 138th Rose Parade, an event announced by Honda in Pasadena, California, set for January 1, 2027. This event is a highlight in one of the most celebrated traditions worldwide.
The exciting news was shared during halftime of the homecoming game, where both fans and band members received a special message from Honda President Terry Madigan, displayed on a big screen at the stadium.
“Each year, we host over 5,000 musicians from across the country and around the globe,” Madigan noted.
“After reviewing months of applications, resumes, and videos, we were genuinely impressed by your musical talent, team spirit, and technical skills. Though many bands applied, only a select few were picked this year. On behalf of our committed 935 members and staff, we’re delighted to invite the Southerners to parade from Jacksonville State University to the 138th Rose Parade on January 1, 2027. Welcome to the celebration of the American New Year.”
The Rose Parade, presented by Honda, attracts an audience of over 78 million viewers worldwide and sees more than 700,000 spectators lining its route, establishing it as one of the most recognized parades globally.
This year, Jacksonville State has a fantastic opportunity to showcase its tradition of hosting one of the largest university marching bands in the nation. Back in 2025, the Southerners had 484 marching members and a travel group of 527, including directors and support staff.
“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” remarked Dr. Kenneth G. Bodyford, the band director. “Among the many incredible stages the Marching Southerners have performed on, the Rose Parade particularly stands out. The fame, visibility, and promotional potential are unmatched.”
The Southern itinerary will also include about six days of activities that encompass bandfest, community service projects, and other performances to showcase the band’s artistry and spirit. Notably, this trip coincides with the band’s 70th anniversary season.
For over 65 years, the award-winning Marching Southerners have graced some of the world’s most iconic venues, from the beaches of Hawaii to historical sites in Italy, and most recently, the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Renowned for their creativity and enthusiasm, the Southerners embody the spirit of what it means to be part of “the friendliest campus in the South” wherever they go.
To participate in the Rose Parade, at least 95% of the band members must attend the event, and alumni along with the local community are crucial in providing support. Jacksonville State University plans to announce travel and fundraising details shortly, aiming to facilitate this unique moment in the band’s history.
