Jay Littleton Ballpark, featured in the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” was destroyed by fire in Ontario, California, on Thursday.
The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. ABC 7 NewsThe Ontario Fire Department responded to the scene and found massive flames shooting out from the stadium and dugouts. “Unfortunately, the extent of the fire… resulted in the complete loss of the stadium,” Deputy Chief Michael Wedel said. According to ABC 7 News, the fire department tried their best but were unable to save the popular venue.
Jay Littleton Ball Park was built in the 1930s and featured wooden bleachers. The ballpark has been the setting for many movies, but it became most famous after the filming of “A League of Their Own,” starring Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Geena Davis.
The park is owned by the city and operated by the Department of Public Works, and was designated a historic landmark in 2003. The entire community is upset to learn that the baseball field has been destroyed.
The site has been renovated several times, but officials said parts of the building still had a lot of old, dry wood remaining that likely caused it to burn quickly.
Aaron Mathiesen, president of Ontario Eastern Little League, said of the heartbreaking loss, “It lit up like a matchbox. It's like literally watching history burn.”
“This is the third base dugout where Tom Hanks uttered his famous line, 'You can't cry at baseball!'” Matthiessen told ABC News 7.
Matthiessen also said the building has fallen into disrepair in recent years.
“A big part of it was the homeless people coming in and destroying things and constantly causing problems and making it unsafe for players to be on the field and unsafe for fans to be in the stands,” he said. He believes this may have been what started the fire, according to ABC 7 News.
“Obviously, that could be one of the factors, but right now there's no indication that that's the cause,” Wedel said. (RELATED: Shocking Video of Marc Anthony's House on Fire)
