Jay Mitchell: Alabama needs to turn away from crime as a choice

A mob surged through downtown Los Angeles, clashing with law enforcement, launching Molotov cocktails, firing mortars, and even ramming police vehicles. They wreaked havoc on local businesses, setting buildings ablaze while brandishing the Mexican flag and defacing the American flag, causing fear among residents.

Amid this chaos, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass seemingly did nothing to quell the unrest.

Instead of addressing the violence, they seemingly placed the blame on President Donald Trump rather than the protesters. They criticized his immigration policies, suggesting that they were creating unnecessary tension for the already fraught American landscape.

It appears these left-leaning leaders pick and choose when to prioritize public safety; they allow chaos when it aligns with their interests, yet they swiftly act when it suits their agenda.

Take the Biden administration’s crackdown, for example, which has seen peaceful demonstrators arrested while enforcing strict regulations during the pandemic. Back in 2020, Governor Newsom imposed a controversial lockdown that dictated how Californians could enjoy their environment, even arresting beachgoers for simply wanting to be outside.

Ironically, he himself was caught enjoying an elegant birthday dinner with friends during the height of those restrictions.

The refusal of leaders like Newsom to enforce laws against looters and violent protesters suggests an alarming alignment with disorder. It raises questions about their true priorities.

Thankfully, Trump has recognized the nature of this political unrest and hasn’t allowed it to overshadow the rights of law-abiding citizens. He’s shown that there’s a need to restore order, regardless of what local leaders may think.

This is why he deployed the National Guard to protect law enforcement and federal properties in Los Angeles.

Sadly, the chaos seen in cities like Los Angeles isn’t isolated; Alabama has faced similar issues. Following criticism from Senator Tuberville regarding Newsom’s handling of crime, Newsom responded by pointing to Alabama’s crime rates, as if this somehow negated the discussion. But what he fails to acknowledge is that Alabama’s crime problems stem from the same ineffective leftist policies he champions in California.

Yes, urban violence in Alabama is a real concern, with cities like Birmingham experiencing record murder rates, and Montgomery facing a rise in crime as well.

This culture of violence is a choice we can choose to reject. Effective enforcement of the law is pivotal for public safety. Based on historical examples, like Los Angeles in the 1990s and New York in the 2000s, it’s clear that strong policies can lead to significant reductions in crime.

Many Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the turmoil affecting their communities and are ready to voice their concerns.

People are fed up with the destruction wrought by anarchists and others driven by a radical agenda, and they appreciate having a president who stands firm against lawlessness.

This sense of urgency is partly why I’m running for Alabama Attorney General.

As we look toward the chance that Trump may secure a second term, we need assertive leadership willing to confront the radical left and restore order.

I’m thankful for Trump’s guidance during this critical time. If elected Attorney General, I am ready to join him in this essential fight.
