Republican vice presidential nominee and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance on Sunday accused CNN of ignoring its guest, former master sergeant and Minnesota National Guard soldier Doug Julin, who he said overstepped his authority by saying Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz had retired from the military before his unit was deployed to Iraq.
Julin, who was the brigade command sergeant major to which Waltz was assigned, said on CNN on Saturday that Waltz knew his unit would be deployed to Iraq six months before it received orders to do so. Julin said Waltz promised to deploy and then reneged on that promise by going against his wishes and asking senior officials for approval to leave.

Vance told CNN host Dana Bash that Walz “lied” about his military service and said the Harris and Walz campaigns claim Walz “falsely spoke” about using weapons “in war.” Vance said several soldiers who served with Walz have similarly criticized the Minnesota governor, including CNN's Julin.
“In response to the question of when he left the National Guard, he turned in his election paperwork on Feb. 10, 2005, a month before the National Guard announced it might be deploying to Iraq, so he ended up being two months late. He left two months before they actually received his paperwork,” Bash said.
“But last night on CNN, his actual director, Dana, said he knew he was going to be deployed to Iraq. […] “In the fall of 2004,” Vance responded, “so he knew he was going to go to Iraq. He made the decision to resign, retire, whatever term you want to use.”
“Retire,” Bash interjected.
“Any reason would do. Because he wanted to run for Congress. He lied about that! He said he didn't know he was going to Iraq when he decided to retire. That's another lie, as even his senior military officers said,” Vance told Bash.
Waltz retired in May 2005, two months before the unit received orders to mobilize. According to To Minnesota Public Radio. (Related: 'She has no ideas': Trump accuses Kamala Harris of 'copying' key campaign pledges)
