Jen Psaki Admits Dems Are ‘In The Wilderness’ Without A ‘Clear Leader Of The Party’

MSNBC’s Jen Psaki acknowledged Sunday that the Democratic Party appears to be in a “wilderness” without a “clear leader” after Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to President-elect Donald Trump.

Democrats are struggling to understand how Harris lost to Trump in both the electoral college and the popular vote, and the defeat within the Democratic Party’s key voting bloc means that the party will be in the next presidential election. Some warn that it could be devastating. On “Meet the Press,” Psaki said viewers shouldn’t “focus on the visual moments” of the meeting between President Trump and President Joe Biden, in which Biden appeared cheerful. He added that some Democrats have an opportunity to step up and lead the party. Because there doesn’t seem to be any direction. “Listen, I think the Democratic Party is in a wilderness. As you said earlier, the party doesn’t have a clear leader. Joe Biden is going to leave office soon. Kamala Harris just lost the election. A lot of governors. and others could emerge,” Psaki said. “Maybe it’s people we don’t know yet, but there’s no clear leader of the party at the moment. People have to decide, so for me it’s an opportunity. Nobody’s giving up, right? It’s either you grab the mantle or you don’t.”

“Are you going to be the right person to stand up to Trump? Are you going to be the person who brings the country together? Are you going to be the person who talks about the economy in a way that people understand? There are many ways. . . . We don’t know who’s going to show up, but we’re in that moment right now,” Psaki added.

Post-election exit polling data showed Trump made significant gains among voters who have long struggled for the Republican Party, such as Hispanics and black men. The former president not only gained 14 points among Hispanics nationally, but also gained 7 points among voters ages 18 to 29. According to to Reuters.

While some Democrats have questioned why millions of Americans “didn’t buy into” Harris’ appeal to the nation, the party wants to stop “underestimating” the former president. Some argue that we need to start understanding how voters actually perceive the institutions around them.
