Why did you become a dental hygienist?

When I meet someone, the first thing I notice is their smile. Their smile says a lot about the person! When I was 14, I decided that I wanted to work in the field of dentistry.

Where did the nickname Flagstaff Tooth Fairy come from?

In 1992, I began my public health career as a dental hygienist in Coconino County. Part of my job responsibilities was to provide oral hygiene education in schools. During my presentation, I noticed that the children weren’t engrossed in my presentation. Later in the day, I thought about it and decided to dress up as the Tooth Fairy. And handing out prizes captivated all children of all ages!

I created costumes depending on which children’s movie was on. I was a Power Tooth Fairy when Power Rangers hit big. In Toy Story, I dressed up as Jessie the cowgirl. I was also Princess Leia, the molar raider, and the dazzling Tooth Fairy.

What is your favorite part of your work?

My favorite part is working with children to make dental care fun. Many Flagstaff dentists said they could tell when I was in the classroom.

My greatest joy is giving smiles to children and adults because everyone deserves a smile!jenthetoothfairy@hotmail.com. (Want Tooth Fairy from Flagstaff in your classroom? Email her!)

Jenny Zamora Garcia and another dental hygienistWhat made you come to NAU?

When I researched dental hygiene schools in the 80’s, there were only two in Arizona: Phoenix College and NAU. I was accepted into both hygiene programs. NAU was the only program that offered him a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. I chose NAU because my goal is to become an Air Force dentist and I need a bachelor’s degree to get into dental school or receive an Air Force dental scholarship.

Tell us about a cherished childhood memory and how it affects your life today.

When I was in fifth grade, my mom and I went shopping in Tucson during the hot summer months. Her mother found herself with three children walking barefoot on hot cement without shoes. Her mother quickly turned around, parked the car, and bought shoes for her children. That was my first experience of making a difference in someone’s life. I wanted to give back and make a difference too!

When I graduated from the hygiene program, I was the first and only person to receive the Outstanding Community Service Award. This is because Flagstaff was a hygiene student who always volunteered at all events, including free services to the community.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Air Force dentist. His father served in the Air Force for 20 years and worked in intelligence. We have traveled all over Europe and America. I wanted to travel the world as an Air Force dentist. Unfortunately, that never happened because Flagstaff didn’t have a dental school. Also, I didn’t want to leave her husband and her 4 years. When AT STILL Dental School opened, I was seriously considering going there, but I had two young children. My kids didn’t want to live apart, so I decided not to go to dental school. Being with my family was more important to me.
