John H. Wallace Pistol Challenge to begin at public shooting ranges in Alabama

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has kicked off a new recreational shooting event, the John H. Wallace Pistol Challenge, starting on August 9th at the public shooting range in Etois.

This initiative is part of National Shooting Sports Month and aims to give handgun owners a chance to refine their marksmanship in a competitive, yet relaxed environment.

According to Matt Weathers, law enforcement chief for the ADCNR’s Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) division, “We created this new Pistol Challenge to offer recreational shooters more opportunities to enhance their skills. We welcome everyone interested in sports to participate in these events.”

This challenge honors the first Alabama conservation committee member, who served between 1907 and 1920. It focuses on commonly owned pistols, promoting firearm safety, outdoor fun, and family-friendly competition—no special gear is necessary.

Each event in this series includes three timed rounds. Participants will shoot 10 rounds each, with 60 seconds allocated per round, aiming at Bullseye targets located 25 yards away. A top score can reach 300 points. The best shooters at each venue will receive awards, and scores from all four events will be combined to identify the statewide champion. In case of a draw, speed will determine the winner. Trophies honoring the champions will be displayed at the WFF Law Enforcement Headquarters in Montgomery or public shooting ranges across the state.

The Etois event will run from 8 a.m. to noon, situated around five miles north of Gadsden on Hollow Road in Oulu. After the event, the Etowah Range will close temporarily for a $2.5 million renovation project.

The John H. Wallace Pistol Challenge arises in response to the increasing interest in sports and handgun ownership among the public. The agency is also working on advanced shooting facilities in Shelby County and provides firearm training courses throughout Alabama.

To enter, individuals must have a valid, state-issued Wildlife Management Area (WMA) license, hunting, fishing, or wildlife heritage license, which allows access to public shooting ranges and community archery parks. This license expires each year on August 31st. Young shooters must be accompanied by adults.

Registration is required in advance; interested participants should email the WFF Hunter Education Office or call (334) 242-3620. A valid photo ID and license must be shown at check-in on the event day.
