Senator Kennedy Critiques Governor Newsom’s Crime Response
Republican Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana has expressed that President Trump’s tough stance on crime is compelling California’s Governor Gavin Newsom to take action. Kennedy remarked on Fox News that he was somewhat taken aback by Newsom’s recent efforts to tackle crime in significant urban areas.
Kennedy noted that the deployment of California State Police to various cities signifies a shift in Newsom’s approach, possibly in reaction to the federal threats from the Trump administration regarding law enforcement. He commented, “Newsom has surprised us. He’s taken some smart steps by sending state police to assist local law enforcement against crime.” Kennedy acknowledged that while Newsom’s actions might be a response to outside pressure, he would welcome any efforts that could help resolve the issues at hand.
Trump has hinted at sending National Guard units to cities including Baltimore, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, and New York. He additionally mentioned the possibility of deploying the National Guard to assist San Francisco specifically in addressing urban problems.
In contrast, Newsom claimed he’s not reacting to Trump’s threats, emphasizing that his initiatives differ greatly from the tactics used in Washington, D.C. Reports indicate that a federal intervention in D.C. led to numerous arrests and gun confiscations amid ongoing discussions about crime management.
Interestingly, Newsom pointed out that Louisiana’s crime rate is significantly higher than California’s, while Kennedy argued that crime has only escalated during Newsom’s time in office. “Under Newsom, crime rates have worsened every year,” Kennedy stated, criticizing Newsom for not taking more proactive measures. He suggested that the governor seems to prioritize discussions around crime without implementing real change, accusing him of being reluctant to confront the fundamental issues involved.
