John Roberts Announces Candidacy for Alabama State Senate
In a move that’s sure to resonate in North Alabama’s conservative circles, John Roberts has officially declared his intention to run for the state Senate. A commercial property developer deeply rooted in the Huntsville Regional Senate District 2, he emphasizes his commitment to serving Alabamians for generations.
At just 33 years old, Roberts is vying for the seat currently held by long-standing state Senator Tom Butler (R-Madison), who revealed that the upcoming 2026 legislative session will be his last.
“Today, I’m announcing my candidacy for Senate District because I believe in Alabama’s untapped potential,” Roberts said. “As a father, I’m not only focused on the next election but also on the future for my children.”
He elaborated, “Now is the time to build our nation while leveraging our momentum. I envision a state where hard work is rewarded, families are supported, and children take pride in calling it home.”
Roberts leads Freedom Real Estate & Capital, a prominent commercial real estate company founded by Alabama’s Business Titan Bill Roark. His background also includes experience in workforce and economic development, underlining his readiness for public service.
Previously, he was the director of business maintenance and expansion for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, where he played an integral role in attracting jobs and bolstering the local economy. His efforts on significant economic development projects have solidified his relationships with local employers while enhancing the region’s economic landscape.
Roberts’ commitment to workforce development is further evident from his time at the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association, where he co-founded the North Alabama Home Building Academy, a no-cost vocational school aimed at preparing individuals for careers in construction. The success of this initiative was acknowledged in 2021 with the Alabamaworks Innovator Award presented by Governor Kay Ivey.
In 2022, at 30, he ran for Congress in the 5th Congressional District after former Congressman Mo Brooks vacated his seat. Despite a robust campaign, he secured nearly 14% of the vote in a competitive four-way race against other candidates.
Now, with his eyes set on the Alabama Legislature, Roberts believes that District 2—and the entire state—has a chance to harness the benefits from the Trump administration and the Republican-led US Congress.
“The Trump administration laid the groundwork for America’s prosperity, and Alabama must be prepared to capitalize on that,” he stated. “It’s about creating an environment where our kids can find great jobs, businesses can prosper, and families can thrive. It all begins with investing in our people and workforce.”
Roberts noted that District 2 is positioned at the forefront of Alabama’s innovation economy, with top-notch aerospace, technology, and manufacturing firms. “Leadership is essential to maintaining competitiveness. By forging strategic partnerships with UAH, Calhoun Community College, and K-12 schools, we’ll cultivate a skilled workforce essential for driving the Alabama economy,” he added.
He also emphasized the need to advocate for North Alabama, stating, “For too long, Montgomery has overlooked our growth.” He expressed concern that out of every infrastructure dollar sent to Montgomery, only 33 cents returns to the local area. “That’s not just unfair; it’s poor business for Alabama. I’ll work to bring our money back.”
The Alabama Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
