John Wahl’s Potential Run for Lt. Governor
John Wahl has stated that he will step down as chairman of the Alabama Republican Party if he chooses to run for Lieutenant Governor in 2026.
He has made his intentions public in recent weeks and is expected to join a growing list of candidates, which includes current statewide officials like Constitutional Bureau Chief Wes Allen and AG Commissioner Rick Patee.
Wahl communicated with members of the state executive committee on Thursday night, addressing a petition that was circulated this week. He mentioned, “I don’t want to change party rules for my own benefit.” This petition suggests allowing the party’s chairman or secretary to take a leave of absence while holding office.
Bonnie Sachs, the author from the 4th district and chairman of the ALGOP steering committee, noted that the petition gathered over 100 signatures within just a day of being shared.
“John is quite well-liked among the state committee members, and the thought of losing him is tough for many. His achievements for the party are remarkable; we haven’t had another chairman win elections like him,” Sachs stated on Thursday night.
The proposed changes would place all responsibility on the Vice-Chair during such absences.
In his statement, Wahl reaffirmed his dedication to the party’s conservative values and expressed confidence in Vice-Chair Reynolds stepping in effectively when needed.
“I appreciate everyone sharing their thoughts about my potential run for Lieutenant Governor and the petitions regarding leaves of absence for the chairman and secretary while in office,” he expressed.
He also showed gratitude towards those who worked on the petition but clarified his stance on not wanting rules amended for his personal situation. Wahl emphasized his commitment to transparency about his intentions to possibly run for office and reassured members that if he were to pursue an election, he would resign from his position as party chair. He acknowledged the collection of signatures for rule changes but noted that the organizers had agreed not to submit them at his request.
Wahl expressed his unwavering commitment to prioritizing the party’s interests and maintaining shared values, stating, “I am fully confident in our vice-chair Joan Reynolds. If I pursue a run, I believe she would lead the Alabama Republican Party exceptionally well.”
He reminded everyone that regardless of his decision, he would continue to support the party in various capacities, affirming, “My dedication to advancing conservative principles and defending our freedoms remains strong.”
In closing, Wahl thanked the members for their ongoing support and expressed excitement for what lies ahead.
