The murderous political violence in America today is not entirely attributable to one cause or another. Certainly, such violence must be condemned by all responsible political and civic activists as we move ever closer to an irreparable national abyss. But despite the hyperbolic reports that MSNBC broadcasts daily, not all sides are equally responsible for the terrible situation America faces today.

While Trump may not always be the most careful rhetorician, he has never actively called on his supporters to physically attack political opponents. On January 6, he told a crowd of his supporters at the Ellipse,Peacefully and patriotically” demonstrated at the Capitol. But the same can't be said for Trump's opponents. Earlier this year, Rep. Dan Goldman of New York said on MSNBC that Trump is “unfit to serve,” “subverting democracy” and “must be removed.” A poll released Wednesday found that a staggering 28% of Democrats said America would be better off if Trump were assassinated, and an additional 24% admitted they weren't sure. This is unacceptable.

The left has violent tendencies that date back at least to Karl Marx’s calls for a world revolution of the proletariat, and even earlier to the French Revolution. And in today’s post-truth world, opportunistic narratives often trump cold facts. But Trump is neither a “fascist” nor a “dictator.” On the contrary, his first term was marred, if anything, by excessive subservience and an unwillingness to fire rebellious bureaucrats.

Unless MSNBC commentators and their left-wing allies tone down their rhetoric, reasonable observers would conclude that they agree with the 28 percent of Democrats who want Trump dead.
