July 20 letters of the day

Judge Alito partially justified a free ride on a private jet to Alaska, which he said was used as an extra seat on the plane.

My guess is that planes always have extra seats for sitting Supreme Court Justices, especially if the plane’s owner has court business.

I am a Superior Court Judge, mediator and arbitrator. If you do not reveal such a relationship to the parties, you will be given a hat and shoes.

This is a rule that applies to all judges except those of the Supreme Court. Perhaps the time to consider it is long past.

Another justification for Mr. Thomas and Mr. Alito is that disclosure was not required under current Supreme Court rules.

Reply to “Don’t Ask for Trouble”

Concerning the June 25th letter “Don’t bother me”.

The tone of the letter was bullying. While embracing the LGBTQ community, he writes, “we’ve come to embrace them,” but he continues his receptivity measures by saying, “They have proven to be an intelligent, creative, and productive nation.” He hates “fancy exhibitionists”. Celebrating pride and identity “gets you in trouble.” The author recommends sitting down and talking with “gay, transgender, etc.” family members and friends to understand their experiences with them. Diversity is a great gift to us. I hope with some empathy he will be able to understand the difference.

Chemicals linger forever in Tucson’s drinking water

Tucson residents are among the millions of Americans whose health is at risk from drinking tap water contaminated with “permanent chemicals” (PFAS) that exceed the EPA’s proposed standards.

Senator Mark Kelly is a member of the Environment and Public Works Commission, which is considering legislation on managing PFAS. However, the bill could be amended to include liability exemptions for certain industries that contribute to water pollution. Some senators want to “separate” favored industries from Superfund relief program responsibilities for PFAS and undermine “polluter pays” laws.

Congress has never exempted the chemical industry or any other industry from Superfund liability. Doing so would be unfair, perpetuate the health risks from PFAS, and lead more industries to seek exemptions from the Bedrock Environment Act.

Urge Senator Kerry to oppose any bill that creates a “liability loophole” for PFAS pollution that violates “polluter pays” laws, increases chemical pollution, and further endangers Tucson residents as a whole.

Shame on Arizona

The disgrace of Arizona politicians continues. When I moved here in his 1986, we were influenced (and eventually impeached) by Governor Evan Mecham’s machinations and his opposition to holding MLK Day. Later, Governor Fife Symington resigned after being convicted of a felony. There was even a shot of Governor Jan Brewer waving her finger in President Barack Obama’s face (meaning she wasn’t disrespectful, she explained). Election deniers Rep. Andy Biggs and Rep. Paul Gossard have also joined in supporting the Jan. 6 riots.

But it continues. This week, Rep. Eli Crane called African Americans “people of color” in an attack on “wakeness” within the military. At least he didn’t use the N word. There was a time when Arizona politicians like John McCain made us proud to live here. Arizona is a purple state now, but it looks embarrassingly red.

Incompetence

So the Secret Service closed an “investigation” into the cocaine found in the White House with no results. What are you kidding me? Sorry, I can’t see anything here. Let’s move on. Compliant media flows instantly. It’s not a big deal.

They evacuated the building! What if it was anthrax or ricin? Now, it turns out, is the third time drugs have been found in the White House. White House response: Silence. I can conclude, first, that the Secret Service has no idea how to do their job, and second, drug use is tolerated in this administration. It is concealed and stinky.

twain was right

Our former president has been accused of many crimes in various jurisdictions. Among these charges are attempts to overturn elections that have been duly recognized in 62 state and federal courts. Other charges include mishandling government documents, complicity in electoral fraud, obstruction of electoral affairs, obstruction of official duties, incitement to insurgency, abetting and abetting, and many other serious crimes.

These allegations come from agencies within the government driven by law rather than partisan politics. Despite these allegations and the many personal accusations related to his lack of character and demeaning behavior, his supporters remain resolutely loyal. And they claim he is the candidate for the upcoming 2024 election. From this I can only conclude that Mark Twain was right. “No amount of evidence can convince a fool.”

Hey Putin, I don’t understand

Hey Putin, if you want to take over Ukraine, don’t you want the whole country? All your bombings and killings leave the country in ruins and are of little value until the money is spent rebuilding all the destruction. Destroying buildings, infrastructure, cultures, industries and people doesn’t give you much. Is your goal to reduce the country to rubble?

You are not only stupid, you are also a war criminal. Do you want to spend time in jail with your friend Mr. Trump? Life is much more than how you act. You might want to think about peace that leads to prosperity. It’s an idea that should be on the minds of Republicans as well. Think how great America would be if it worked for all, instead of just a handful.

Pedestrian deaths are preventable

According to the Tucson Police Department, Tucson will have 49 pedestrian fatalities in 2022. This is up from 33 pedestrian fatalities in 2021. Tucson is her 13th most dangerous city in the United States for pedestrians, according to a Smart Growth America report.

The majority of pedestrian fatalities in Tucson occur at night, and many of the victims are people walking or biking under the influence of alcohol. Other factors include speeding, distracted driving, and poor visibility. Improved street lighting. Develop more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, including wider sidewalks and more pedestrian crossings. Tighter enforcement of road traffic laws. Raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and distracted driving his Tucson is taking steps to address pedestrian fatalities. The city has developed a pedestrian safety action plan. This should go a long way toward making our streets safer. we can save lives.

Question neglected sections of River Road

Pima County has moved goalposts regarding the restoration of part of the River Road between Pontatok and Swann. This is the east-west aorta, and if you drive in either direction on a regular basis, you may need some front-end adjustments. The rest is just a small part of the beautifully maintained road. Residents adjacent to this abandoned area brought the area to the attention of the Pima County Transportation Authority in June 2022. Two residents attended a monthly meeting to document the devastation.

We were informed in March 2023 that this section was assessed based on their criteria and rated ‘Poor’, but just recently it was discovered that this section was not included in the financial plan for 2023/2024 and we changed our rating of this section from ‘Poor’ to ‘Good’. why? It’s as bad as ever! Rating this section of River Road as “good” is a joke.

Biden’s economy

My Republican friends have told me how bad the economy is and why Biden is to blame.

So I spent some time researching our economy and found some very interesting facts.

Our country has the highest economic growth rate and the lowest inflation rate among the G7 countries. The unemployment rate has fallen to 3%, the lowest in five years. Wages are now finally starting to grow faster than year-on-year inflation. 13 million jobs have been created since Biden took office. The labor market remains strong and consumer spending is strong.

I think this is what Republicans call a bad economy.
