Law Enforcement Cracks Down on Illegal Immigration in D.C.
Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, announced on Thursday that 29 undocumented immigrants were apprehended overnight during a focused operation in Washington, D.C. This action involved hundreds of officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and national security forces, leading to a total of 45 arrests on Wednesday night.
“Last night, we removed 29 illegal aliens from the streets of Washington, D.C. Many had already received final orders for removal,” Leavitt stated. She emphasized that these efforts are part of an ongoing initiative by a federal task force collaborating with the MPD.
The 45 arrests included individuals charged with serious offenses such as assaulting officers, possessing child sexual abuse materials, illegal firearms, drug trafficking, and even attacking officers with food items. Additionally, law enforcement seized three illegal firearms during this operation.
Earlier in the week, on the first night of former President Trump’s crackdown, 23 people were arrested for serious crimes, including murder and illegal firearm possession. This number nearly doubled to around 43 arrests the following night.
Border official Tom Homan mentioned on Wednesday’s “Story with Martha McCallum” that the MPD is actively collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to change the status of Washington as a sanctuary city.
Leavitt referred to a Washington Post opinion poll released in May, revealing that 65% of D.C. residents view crime as a significant issue. The MPD stated that the crime situation may not solely reflect on the city or its inhabitants, suggesting other factors are at play. Interestingly, there’s a sentiment that some officials, including Trump, may not fully acknowledge the realities of crime in the area.
While some argue that corporate media downplays the violent crime rates using potentially manipulated MPD statistics, FBI data shows only a 10% decrease in violent crime since 2024.
