Bullhead City — A short drive into the foothills of Davis Camp is the sparkling Lake Mojave. Now tourists and locals alike can take advantage of a multi-million dollar upgrade to the marina on the lake closest to Bullhead City.
Katherine Landing Marina, on the southern end of the Arizona side of Lake Mojave, recently cut the ribbon on May 5 with both the Bullhead City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce at the new Marina One facility.
This update included an ADA-accessible main section, new docking slips, and perhaps most importantly, a fueling station with multiple pumps.
“This is a state-of-the-art system,” said Tim Colvin, regional vice president of Vista Recreation.
Colvin joked that Marina’s local employees are probably sick of seeing him, and said the project has been around for a long time.
“Today is a great day. It took five years of hard work,” says Colvin.
His statement was joined by multiple speakers at the ribbon cutting.
Julie Dragatz, director of commercial services for the National Park Service, said:
She highlighted some of the connections to the Lake Mead Recreation Area, of which Lake Mojave is a part, and the surrounding area, such as the Shared Heritage Trail, which runs through Davis Camp to the Davis Dam.
NPS Deputy Superintendent Mike Gauthier said the Parks Service has been working hard to upgrade facilities on Lake Mojave as well as on Lake Mead.
Gauthier also couldn’t help but remind the gathered crowds to stay safe on the lake.
“Drive safely in the marina and watch out for each other,” he said.
While most of the speeches emphasized the importance of the marina to the community as a whole, Jackie Wallin, president and CEO of the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce and Bo Hellams, president and CEO of the Bullhead Area Chamber of Commerce, both We shared personal stories.
“I’ve been coming to this lake since 1963. My dad raced flat-bottomed propeller boats when he was seven and taught me to go really fast on one ski,” Wallin said. Told. “So we’ve seen a lot of growth in this lake as well as in Laughlin and Bullhead City.”
She was particularly excited about the fuel station, but emphasized that everything from the docks to the concession stand is a great addition to the area.
Similarly, Hellams said the long history of water rescue operations and love of recreation made the upgrade personal.
“I go boating almost every weekend. Wave surfing, wakeboarding, camping here, and using this facility to raise my kids,” said Helams. “…it’s not necessarily about the visitor. Sometimes you don’t realize you have a national park in your backyard. It’s absolutely amazing.”
