Katie Britt criticizes lenient crime policies, stating that cities led by Democrats foster ‘a crisis of lawlessness’

Senator Katie Britt Calls for Stricter Law Enforcement Measures

Senator Katie Britt is amplifying her plea for tougher law enforcement and stricter sentencing measures, cautioning that many “blue cities” across the U.S. are grappling with their own crime issues.

During a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Britt (R-Montgomery) pointed to the dire impacts of policies such as the LAX initiative, which she argues have downgraded crime severity, weakened police authority, and made it harder to prosecute violent offenders.

“Our current challenges stem from the Blue City,” Britt remarked. “This includes moves towards cashless bail, lowering the classifications of rights and protections available to law enforcement, as seen in Washington, DC in 2022, and allowing pretrial releases for the most dangerous offenders.”

Britt engaged with Forlescook, a grandmother whose 22-year-old grandson was killed in Washington, DC, discussing the critical need to prioritize rising crime and public safety.

“Your grandson should still be with us today,” Britt said to Cook. “We must employ every available tool to prevent this from happening to another grandmother, be it in DC or elsewhere in the country.” She noted Cook’s sentiment of feeling unheard. “In your heart?”

Cook responded straightforwardly: “If we don’t hold the killer accountable, they’ll keep killing.”

Britt also questioned Detective Greg Pemberton, chairman of the DC Police Union, regarding the city’s 2022 policing and judicial reform act.

“Based on your experience, when leaders undermine law enforcement, it seems there’s a disconnect with actual law enforcement practices… What strategies do you have to recruit and retain police officers?” Britt inquired.

Pemberton labeled the legislation “the worst public safety law,” highlighting its impact of depleting 800 officers in just five years. “It makes it nearly impossible to ensure accountability for those convicted of violent crimes,” he stated.

Britt centers her Senate efforts on public safety and accountability. Her proposal, the Clean DC Act, aims to repeal controversial reform laws in the city, which she argues illustrate the consequences of politics overshadowing public safety.

“In 2023, one of my staff members experienced a situation involving a firearm in the district. D.C.’s crime rate is above the national average and even exceeds those of many developing capitals. Anyone claiming DC is free of crime is simply ignoring reality.”

As violent crime continues to escalate in major cities, Britt is positioning herself as a prominent advocate for restoring law and order, opposing what she sees as a “dangerous experiment in criminal justice reform” that leaves communities exposed.
