Katie Porter Says ‘One Instance’ Of Murder ‘Shouldn’t Shape’ US Immigration Policy After Nursing Student Killed

Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., downplayed the need for policy changes after the killing of nursing student Laken Riley during an appearance on CNN on Monday.

University of Georgia police arrested José Antonio Ybarra, a Venezuelan immigrant who illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, and charged him with the murder of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley. Mr. Porter, who is running for Senate, sought to divert attention from Mr. Ybarra's immigration status. “Well, I think any time we're dealing with a violent crime, there's going to be outrage and sadness and a sense of loss, but I think it's important to focus on the “I think it's about anything,” Porter told CNN host Erin Burnett. The entire immigration policy, which includes different aspects, should not be shaped by a single case. “So the situation is tragic, it's a loss, and it's important to recognize that, but it's also important to recognize how all the other parts of immigration policy fit together.”

Ybarra was detained at the U.S.-Mexico border and released by Border Patrol. Mr Porter said a comprehensive approach to immigration was needed.

“I think we’ve seen that efforts under Title 42 and some other policies to just cite and close the border don’t actually solve the long-term problem, which means that the border It's that we're not putting the resources and the policies in place. There are all kinds of disruptions and challenges, from a lack of immigration judges to a lack of investment in technology to help test for fentanyl, and I voted for it, but the Dreamers and We need to recognize that we are not living up to our promises and do more,” Porter argued. “All of these things combine to create the chaotic immigration policies that we see.”
