Kay Ivey, GOP governors reject power grab by World Health Organization

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey is opposed to a new proposal to give new powers to the World Health Organization (WHO). Ivey joins 23 other Republican governors in opposing the bill. letter He voiced his opposition to President Joe Biden, saying he believes “the two proposals currently under negotiation would give unprecedented and unconstitutional powers over the United States and its people.”

“These proposed agreements aim to make significant changes to the existing WHO regime.
“The government will abolish the International Health Regulations (IHR) and introduce a new 'pandemic pact' (treaty) that will undermine national sovereignty, violate states' rights and jeopardize constitutional freedoms,” the letter said.

The governors argue that the WHO's new powers would infringe on the rights of Americans.

“The purpose of these measures is to give the WHO, and particularly its uncontrollable Director-General, the power to restrict the rights of American citizens, including freedom of speech, privacy, travel, medical choice, and informed consent, in violation of fundamental principles of our Constitution,” the letter continued.

The letter also argues that countries should lead health policy during the pandemic, rather than international organizations like the WHO.

“As governors, we affirm that public health policy is a matter for states, not the federal government, and not for international organizations like the WHO,” the letter asserted. “We are committed to resisting any attempt to transfer authority over public policies that affect our people to the WHO, and any attempt by the WHO to assert such authority over our people.”

This is not the first time that Alabama has spoken out against the WHO: Republican members of the Alabama House of Representatives passed a resolution in April condemning the WHO over the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

solution Said“The agency's members encourage the U.S. government to ensure the fundamental freedoms of the American people from the corrupting influence of international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, which are often subject to the influence of authoritarian foreign regimes that do not act in the best interests of the United States.”
