Kirby Smart might be the new king of college football

You can read each week here Across the SECSo let's get into another SEC topic, breaking down last week's biggest matchups, previewing next week's schedule, and talking about the state of the best conference in the land.

This week's issue looks at the power vacuum that will be filled in college football following Nick Saban's retirement.

Saban was a thorn in Kirby Smart's side, preventing him from completely taking over the sport. Smart is 1-5 against Saban and earned his first championship ring against the Tide, but his Bulldogs are still struggling to break out of Alabama's slump, as evidenced this season.

With Saban gone, no active head coach in college football has beaten Smart since the 2018 season.

Repeat.

Of all the coaches currently coaching in college football, not a single one has won smartly in five full years.

Smart lost to Will Muschamp's University of South Carolina and Ed Orgeron's LSU in 2019, and to Dan Mullen's University of Florida in 2020.

While Orgeron and Mullen are now completely removed from coaching, Muschamp has joined Smart's staff in Athens.

But aside from those three blemishes over the course of five years, Alabama was a team Georgia couldn't consistently conquer.

Things aren't going away under new head coach Karen DeBoer, but it would be foolish to expect the same level of success.

Indeed, the SEC, and perhaps sports as a whole, now belong to Smart.

He'll be able to take full advantage of this right away, as they've already hired defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson from Alabama and are likely bringing in freshman superstar safety Caleb Downs. Dew.

When Saban announced his retirement, Smart sent a message and made it loud and clear. The crown is now his.
