Hot air balloons may not fly in strong winds, but kites can.
Next week, thousands of kite enthusiasts will showcase their craft with dozens of hot air balloons at Balloonfest starting January 19th.
These enthusiasts include Jim and Lynn Foster, a couple from California who have been flying quadkites for over 20 years.
The quad kite is a 92-inch-wide kite shaped like a bow tie and has four control lines that give it “infinite control,” according to Jim.
Jim and Lynn, who fly in pair teams called Kite Kids, say they perform synchronized routines to the music. I have played along with all kinds of music.
“It’s a lot like square dancing with callers learning the dance and calling the moves,” Jim said.
The Fosters say this will be their third time in Lake Havasu City for the Balloon Fest, but their hobbies have taken them all over the world, including countries like France, Italy and Belgium.
“We fly with the European Flyer every year,” said Jim. “It (flying a kite) is really big over there.”
The Fosters say they first discovered the hobby in July 2001. While driving up the Oregon coast, I found a small kite festival with four-wheeled kite flyers.
“I thought this was kite flying,” said Jim.
Jim and Lynn Foster attend a balloon fest with fellow flyers Tom King and Vernon White.
According to the Balloonfest schedule, the synchro kite show will be on Friday, January 20th at 12:00pm and 3:00pm, Saturday, January 21st at 4:00pm, and Sunday, January 22nd at 11:30am and 1:00am It would be held.30 pm
