Kitten getting treatment stolen from local animal shelter

A kitten being treated at the Yuma Humane Society was stolen by a couple on Friday, June 30.

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma Police have announced that a kitten from the Yuma Humane Society (HSOY) has been stolen by a man and a woman.

The Yuma Police Department (YPD) said officers learned that an unidentified Hispanic man and woman visited the Humane Society in Yuma and asked questions about a kitten named Siuru.

The couple were asked to complete an Adoption Information Form to obtain approval to adopt the kitten, but did not complete the form.

Yuma police said security camera footage suggested the couple waited until they were undiscovered.

The woman waited in her car until the man returned, opened the kennel, took the kitten in, and both left in a dark gray Honda Civic, YPD said.

HSOY said the kitten’s eye treatments were given three times a day to relieve pain and reduce infections.

According to YPD, a medical team went to give the kitten some medicine early in the morning and found an empty kennel.

Siuru is also being tested to see if she needs surgery, HSOY said, so it’s important to find the kitten soon.

“This kitten is currently in distress without access to medical attention, so we are asking the community for help,” said executive director Annette Ragunas. “We are also pleading with the couple to do the right thing and return the kitten so they can receive the treatment and care they deserve. Please call us to arrange the return of the kitten. Or you can come directly to HSOY.”

YPD attached a still photo containing images of the couple’s car taken from surveillance cameras.

The license plates match the color and design of license plates from the Mexican state of Baja California, and Yuma police said the two spoke English and were wearing medical scrubs.

This incident is still under investigation.
