Lake Havasu High School's baseball season officially began with a 10-0 win against Mojave on Wednesday afternoon.
“I thought we played really well today,” coach Karen Staal said. “They worked really hard all fall, and I think they played really well in the opening game.”
Junior Brock Cross started the scoring for the Knights by hitting a home run over the left field fence on his second pitch at bat. The second goal of the inning came on a passed ball and was scored by Colton Roan.
“Brock is Block. He always makes the game work for us, for him and for Tyler (Thompson),” Staal said. “I think we calmed down a little bit when Brock hit that one. Some of us were a little nervous, but after he hit that, we calmed down a little bit.”
In the second inning, a cross and a sacrifice fly by Trevor Thompson added two more points to put the Knights up 4-0. Trevor Thompson's second sacrifice fly, walks by Keisen Blomenkamp and Carson Lockman, and a single by Paul Bruckner put up four runs in the fourth frame.
A double by Jake Crook and a single by Deegan Cross ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Crook went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, making him the only Knight with multiple hits. Deegan Cross, Rockman, and Bruckner each had a hit, and Brock Cross went 1-for-1 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Tyler Thompson pitched five full innings, allowing two hits and recording four strikeouts.
“Defensively, we played really well. Tyler Thompson threw really well,” Staal said. “I think defense and pitching will be our two strengths this year.”
The Knights will host Lee Williams in the Volunteers' season opener on Saturday at noon.
“We have some things to work on defensively. (Lee Williams) is a good team and always plays us very tough, so it's going to be a very interesting game,” Staal said.
