Seven years ago, an encounter with a woman in the shower at Crazy Horse Campground in Lake Havasu led to a plea bargain for a man in California forced to jail. Darwin Barrera Funes, 32, Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to her kidnapping during a June 21 hearing at the Kingman Center for Law and Justice.
Mojave County Deputy Attorney Jacob Cort said Barrera Funes entered the shower area of the campground when an unknown young adult woman asked him to leave. Cort said Barrera-Funes refused to leave before using physical force to prevent her from leaving the shower area.
Court said the defendant touched the victim in a manner consistent with his intent to sexually assault him before he fled in July 2016. Defense attorney Daniel Christian said Valera Funes had no sexual motive and instead held the young woman for ransom while demanding from others. Her group pays off undisclosed debts.
Attempted sexual assault allegations are dismissed in a plea bargain. Under the terms of the agreement, Judge Billy Sipe is required to hand down the sentence to eight years in prison at a hearing on July 17.
Prosecution of the local case was effectively put on hold until Barrera Funes recently completed a prison sentence in California for an unrelated crime.
