Phoenix (AZ Family) -The Climate Prediction Center continues to predict that a La Niña event is likely to occur this winter. Last month, we wrote about the science behind La Niña and what it means for Arizona’s precipitation over the past several winters.
We know that La Niña events tend to bring drier-than-normal conditions to Arizona, but we wanted to see if the snowfall trends over the past nine years support that trend.
This winter snowfall graph for Flagstaff shows that La Niña winter snowfall has been below average since 2015 in most cases. The red line shows a typical Flagstaff winter snowfall of 58.7 inches.
Of the four La Niña winters since 2015, only one has been above normal. That was in the winter of 2022-2023, when Flagstaff recorded 115.4 inches of snowfall.
This shows that while La Niña shows what tends to happen with winter snowfall, it doesn’t always follow that trend. Either way, it looks like we’re off to a great start, as Flagstaff is likely to see its first snow of the season this Friday through Saturday!
