The Lake Havasu City Council did a little team building before this year’s annual planning session.
On January 30th, the council had dinner with top city staff at Shugrue’s. Normally, when the entire city council meets, they have to handle official city affairs, but Mayor Cal Sheehy said the dinner is a rare opportunity for council members to spend time together without talking about the store. rice field.
“Before the next morning’s planning session, it was an opportunity to meet for dinner and conduct team-building exercises in anticipation of the next day being a full day of consideration of various priorities for the Council and the community. I did,” said Sheehy. “Being able to change the format in this way gives us different perspectives, which allows us to work better and more cohesively as we move on to the different topics at hand in public meetings. .”
The dinner was attended by three of Havasu’s highest-ranking officials (Mayor Jess Knudson, City Attorney Kelly Garry, and City Magistrate Mitchell Karauri), all seven City Council members, and several other city officials. Did.
Note that meeting notices will be made under the Community Events section of the City Notice and meetings are generally by invitation only, not in the meeting section where council meetings are listed. Sheehy said it was not a formal meeting and because the city’s business was not discussed.
There was no formal agenda, but instead an opportunity to explore the dynamics of the Council through the DISC Leadership Behavioral Assessment, which each attendee was asked to complete in advance. This assessment uses the participant’s responses to classify the participant into her four groups of dominance, influence, stability, and conscientiousness.
“This is a classic leadership exercise that identifies communication styles, preferred working styles, preferred dynamics within a team, and traditional leadership benchmarks for those types,” says Sheehy.
Sheehy said DIS helps provide insight into where they all come from that is unique to their role as council members.
“It’s a little different in elected official positions. We need to work together to set the policies preferred by the citizens of our community, but we are all working independently for the citizens of the City of Lake Havasu. We’re working on it,” said Sheehy. “So it’s a little bit different than the team dynamics you might be hired for. may serve as a
After reviewing the DISC results, the group split into two and conducted a consensus-building exercise called “Lost at Sea.”
Using a scenario in which a group is stranded on a South Pacific island after a chartered yacht catches fire, this exercise provides a list of 15 items that were saved before the ship sank. Each person was asked to prioritize the importance of each item to their own survival and then discuss the items and develop a single priority list for the entire group.
“It’s interesting to compare different people’s perspectives and what their priorities are to other people,” says Sheehy. “Overall, it’s really an exercise in how you build consensus, how you work with others, and how you identify and see what other people think differently. That’s fine.”
