The Lake Havasu High School softball team opened the season with a 12-1 win over the Mojave Thunderbirds on Wednesday.
Head coach Cassidy Fitzgerald said, “I think the girls were nervous during warm-ups, it was their first game of the season, there was a lot of excitement and emotion going through them, but as soon as the first pitch was presented. I was ready,” he said. “This game started off with great momentum for them. The girls were able to get their runners on, get their runners moving and bring them in.”
Alaina Johnson and Haley Martin took the mound for Havas. Johnson pitched four innings, giving up two hits and one run, with four strikeouts and the victory. Martin pitched three innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
“The pitching was pretty consistent. Alaina and Haley did everything I asked for, throwing strikes and trusting the defense to make plays,” Fitzgerald said. “Behind that, we made some mistakes and allowed one unearned run, but nothing stopped our pitchers.”
Kylie Gallo was 2-for-3 with two hits and an RBI, while Savannah Primeau, Leah Huffman, Marissa Rodriguez, Madison Nutt and Nicole Simonton each had one hit.
The Knights will play their first home game of the season next Tuesday against Cofa.
“Practice this week is going to be like any other. We're going to work on our defense, make routine plays and figure out our ability to make more difficult plays,” Fitzgerald said. “We continue to swing the bats every day, so we’re ready to be aggressive and hit the ball in games.”
