Boulder City, Nevada – Lake Mead National Recreation Area is conducting a saturation patrol for speeding motorcycles on North Shore Road on May 13. This activity supports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s effort this month to remind all motorists that motorcycle safety is everyone’s safety. Speeding is one of the leading causes of motorcycle fatalities, and Lake Mead is no exception. Motorcycles are the leading cause of fatalities in the park each year. Speeding drivers also endanger local wildlife. Bighorn sheep, desert tortoises and other animals are often seen on the park roads. Maintaining safe driving habits can have a positive impact on them and their habitat.
“At Lake Mead, we often say, ‘Drive like a turtle,'” said Acting Superintendent Mike Gautier. “By slowing down, everyone can be aware of road hazards, protect wildlife, and reach their destination safely.”
Alcohol disorders also play a significant role in fatal crashes involving motorcycles. Of the 2,158 motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes in 2020, 41% were alcohol-related.
