House Oversight Committee Investigates Epstein Case
The House Oversight Committee recently interrogated Alex Acosta, the former US attorney involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2008 plea agreement, and has requested documentation from Epstein’s estate. Acosta, who later became Secretary of Labor under President Donald Trump, is set to voluntarily participate in a transcribed interview that took place on September 19. Chairman James Comer emphasized that the committee is looking into how the government dealt with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, directing that documents from Epstein’s estate be handed over by September 8.
Comer mentioned in a statement, “We recognize that Jeffrey Epstein’s estate has critical documents that could support our investigation and legislation.” He noted that they are prepared to comply with the subpoena to provide these materials.
In the subpoena, Comer indicated that Epstein’s estate possesses significant records pertaining to the investigation, which includes a so-called “birthday book” reportedly curated by Maxwell.
Additionally, the committee plans to verify Acosta’s lack of knowledge regarding the Epstein and Maxwell cases and will accept sworn statements from former attorneys general, including Alberto Gonzalez, Eric Holder, and Jeff Sessions, under threat of penalties for misinformation.
Previously, the three former attorney generals were summoned to provide their testimonies following a vote from the monitoring subcommittee. The committee also noted last Friday that the Justice Department has started to release documents related to Epstein.
This announcement follows closed-door testimony given by Attorney General William Barr the week prior. Subpoenas have also been issued to former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, as well as Hillary and Bill Clinton. However, the committee has decided to retract Mueller’s subpoena due to health concerns hindering his ability to testify.
Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch has received communication regarding the investigation’s scope and how her past dealings relate to the Epstein case.
