Leader of Sierra Club Dismissed After Staff Uprising

Sierra Club Board Dismisses Executive Director Ben Jealous

On Monday, the board of the Sierra Club voted to terminate executive director Ben Jealous, as reported by various sources.

Jealous, who took over the environmental nonprofit organization in early 2023, reportedly faced increasing scrutiny from staff and board members. After what was described as an “extensive” review of his actions, the decision was made to let him go. Reports indicate that staff concerns about Jealous’s leadership style and relationships contributed to this outcome.

Jonathon Berman, a spokesperson for the Sierra Club, stated, “After a comprehensive evaluation of actions within the Sierra Club, we unanimously decided to terminate employment. The Sierra Club will continue to investigate any allegations of misconduct as part of our commitment to our policies and mission.”

Sierra Club Board president Patrick Murphy noted that while there wasn’t a single driving reason for Jealous’s firing, the decision reflects the organization’s adherence to accountability. It seems the board felt that supporting these values was crucial.

Reports of dissatisfaction among volunteers and staff had circulated prior to this decision, with Jealous’s leadership marked by significant layoffs. Erika Dodd, president of the Progressive Worker Union, which represents Sierra Club employees, celebrated the board’s action and highlighted support for Jealous had waned, especially considering issues related to budget management and labor relations.

“We’re hopeful that this change can foster a better relationship between workers and management,” Dodd remarked. “It’s important for the Sierra Club to refocus on its mission, especially during challenging political dynamics.”

Established in 1892, the Sierra Club has a storied history in environmental and political activism. Its website outlines 382 coal plant closures as part of its achievements, reflecting its long-standing commitment to sustainable practices.

The club has also publicly addressed past issues, denouncing the racist remarks made by co-founder John Muir and emphasizing its core values of anti-racism and justice.

This year has seen various major environmental nonprofits, including the Sierra Club, downsizing amid broader shifts in climate activism. Organizations such as the Rocky Mountain Institute and Ocean Conservancy have similarly announced staff cuts, highlighting a transitional period for the sector as it faces new challenges.

Neither the Sierra Club nor Jealous responded to requests for comments regarding the dismissal.
